Context:
The Ready-To-Fly kit is NewBeeDrone’s first suggestion for newer drone pilots interested in experiencing the FPV experience without some of the hassle of investing too much in the necessary gear, equipment and time toward the learning curve of building your own from individual components. This consumer drone kit allows customers who want to buy a total package and get in the air as quickly as possible.
Brief:
The previous transmitter, a controller used to transmit the radio control signal to the drone, was a bit too small, square, uncomfortable in the hand, switches were awkward to manipulate and positioned in less than optimal locations on the transmitter body relative to the average user sized hands. The newer design would improve the aesthetics and ergonomics of the device while working to improve optimal function of additional features to keep up with the market demands.
I used these requirements to spearhead the industrial design of the transmitter body aesthetic and the mechanical design development to align the design intent with the intended injection molding manufacturing processes, pcba functional layout capabilities and production capabilities.
Challenges:
- Communication with international manufacturers and language barriers can be challenging no matter how great your communication skills are, but it is always made easier working with incredibly skilled and passionate people.
- Amalgamating mechanical features and sourced 2 and 3 position switches were the most challenging aspects of this design.
Results:
- A stunning aesthetic with a combination of bold and subtle design features that capture the need for ergonomics and the simplicity of a consumer electronic device.
- Special emphasis was placed on utilizing the NewBeeDrone brand logo in key areas while maintaining simple, yet functional form throughout.
- The over all size was also maintained to reduce the impact on the protective case that the RTF Kit is packaged in.
