Context:

The FLOW motor is NewBeeDrone’s premier motor product line for multi-copters and quadcopters. These brushless DC motors are used to spin the attachable propellers to help the pilot reach the desired performance of their setup. For FPV (first person view) quadcopters, that performance demand is high; requiring both high impact tolerance and smooth operation over the life of the motor.

Brief:

Design a brushless DC motor design aesthetic that can be transposed onto the common motor sizes for the FPV hobby industry inspired by a Mercedes AMG C63 C-class 2011,12, 13 Factory wheel. Pictured, is the first of the motor line and features a 23mm x 6.5mm stator – perfect for FPV freestyle.

Working as an independent contractor, I used these requirements to spearheaded the industrial design of the FLOW motor scalable aesthetic as well as the mechanical design development to align the design intent with the manufacturers machining and production capabilities.

Challenges:

• Communication with international manufacturers can be challenging. For this motor line, confirming which material the factory was actually producing the majority of the motor bell in was difficult. This motor initially launched with A6 Aluminum, which proved to be too soft for the application, so later revisions were produced in 7075 aluminum.

Results:

• The 2306.5mm FLOW brushless motor continues to be one of NewBeeDrone’s most successful motors in their product offering.
• The other 4 motors in FLOW product line are also popular motors as well, which include: 1202 motor, a 1404 motor, a 1408 motor, and a 2004 motor sizes.
